This page includes all the current figures of students and teaching staff in schools. This also includes budget and the number of schools across the country. As of 2017, there are 12 million students in French schools.

Pupils at primary level

Teaching staff

As of 2017, the National Education Ministry was paying 1,104,400 people of which 80 % were teachers. 741,800 were public sector teachers and 142,500 were private sector teachers in a contract with the state.

220,100 members of staff perform administrative functions, technical, management, inspection, education, careers guidance and educational assistance in state schools, at local authority level, as part of the local inspectorate or the central administration.

Measures taken since 2012:

  • in the first degree: 1 post for 5 additional students (2012 -2016): 19,328 job creations for teachers
  • in the second degree: 1 post for 14 additional students (2013-2016): 17,049 job creations for teachers
  • Student Life (re-entry 2016)
  •       40 nurses
  •       60 social service assistants
  •       350 employees for accompanying students with handicaps
  •       2,150 education assistants
  • Continuous Training: budget increased to €99 million in 2017 ( + 28% since 2014)
